A few weeks back Sony New Zealand were kind enough to let me try the world's best sports camera: the A9 III (MRP $10,388), which can take a whopping 120 images per second!!! Sony also lent me their new FE 70-200mm F4 Macro G OSS II(MRP $2550) and FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM II (MRP $3,500) lenses.
I then had to decide what photographs I would take to fully test out this incredible package...and I landed on photographing a fast-paced rugby match, some close-in insect macro photography, photographing and videoing a wedding, some landscape shots, and finally, my go-to photography, the night sky above Wellington's south coast.
First of all, as a sports camera, the A9III is absolutely incredible; it nailed focus points every single time, with zero rolling shutter distortion. Paired with the new 70-200 GM F4 lens I got some incredible, sharp and clean shots. I had never used a 70-200mm like it and was very impressed. Withs its new compact and light weight design, it could make for a fantastic travel lens. It also has half-macro capability 1:2 from 70mm – 200mm, so I tried capturing some insect life, with amazing results.
I own the FE 14mm F1.8 GM so am well served for taking astrophotography shots, but the FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM II equited itself really well and gave a performance on par with my beloved 14mm, but I do think the 14mm is just different class when it comes to astrophotography. I wrapped up my time with the 16-35mm lens with some wedding shots, landscapes of a waterfall in a forest and some amazing dancers at the Newtown Festival and was very pleased with the results.
All in a fantastic experience with amazing body and lenses, thanks, Sony New Zealand, for letting me play with your gear!
Now...should I buy the 70-200 f4 or splurge for the f2.8.
